Whenever we need to talk about the location of something or someone, we will use one of the <strong>prepositions of place in English<\/strong>, such as <em>in, on, at, behind, <\/em>and<em> between<\/em>. The same thing happens with adverbs \u2014 some of them are used to describe how we do something or how often we do that action. We also use adverbs, known as adverbs of place, to indicate where an action happens. We will go over these two categories in this blog post. They are some of the most common words in English! English speakers use them to describe either time or place. Since this blog post is about prepositions of place, let\u2019s go ahead and understand how they are used to express the location of something.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-quick-tips-to-use-in-to-describe-locations\">Quick tips to use <em>in<\/em> to describe locations&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use <strong>in<\/strong> with names of countries, cities or neighborhoods. I\u2019m in bed.&nbsp;<\/li><li>They will have dinner in the living room.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The plane is in the sky.&nbsp;<\/li><li>You can get in the car.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if one object is within another object (internal location), use the preposition <em>in<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take this symbol for example \u2013 \u00a9. The <strong>c<\/strong> is <em>in<\/em> the circle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-on-in-english\">How to use <em>on<\/em> in English&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many English learners have difficulty understanding how <strong>on <\/strong>is different from <em>in<\/em>. The good news is that there are some rules that will help you understand them. One rule you can always follow with <em>at<\/em> is with numbered addresses. An address is the exact location of a place on a map. Let\u2019s take a look at some examples:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Susy lives at 148 Holland Street.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The office is at 784 39th street.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember how we use <em>on<\/em> with street names? If you add a number to the street name (making it an address), you have to use <em>at<\/em> to describe that place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other situations when you should use <em>at<\/em>. The most common adverbs of place are <strong>here<\/strong> and<strong> there<\/strong>. We use <em>here<\/em> to talk about something that is near the speaker, and <em>there<\/em> is used when the object is located further away.
