Who is your best friend? What is the most delicious food in the world? If you didn\u2019t know it already, whenever you talk about something you consider to be at the top level or bottom level of quality, you will use superlative adjectives<\/strong> to describe those opinions. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a look at the difference between comparative <\/a>and superlative adjectives<\/strong> and explore the rules for creating superlative adjectives<\/strong> in English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between the superlative <\/span>and comparative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Comparatives and superlatives are used to make comparisons of any sort. The difference between them is that the comparative (better, faster, etc)<\/em> will compare two people or objects. With a comparative adjective, you also use the word \u2018than\u2019. You can study all the rules we follow in order to form a comparative in this blog post. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a look at the examples below:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • This brownie is more delicious <\/span>than<\/span><\/i> the one we had yesterday.<\/span><\/li>
  • The brownie is better than the ice cream.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Superlative adjectives also make comparisons. However, you use these to show how something or someone is different (for better or for worse) from all other options. Also, you don’t use the word ‘than’ to form a superlative comparison. Read the examples to see a superlative in a sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • This brownie is the most delicious<\/strong> brownie I have ever tasted.  <\/span><\/li>

      Rules to form superlatives<\/span> <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      • \u2018soccer player in the world\u2019 is the complement<\/strong> of the sentence.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Rule #1<\/span> – one-syllable adjectives, add -est to the end <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          With one-syllable adjectives, you add -est to the word in order to form the superlative. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          A syllable is a voiced part of a word. For example, the word water<\/em> has two syllables: wa-ter<\/strong>. The word drink<\/em> has only one syllable. The word elephant <\/em>has three syllables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          If you are unsure about how many syllables one adjective has, you can use the clap trick. It is very simple: clap every time you open your mouth while saying a word. You can also check a dictionary that will put small separators between each syllable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Here is a superlative adjective list. Each has only one syllable and ends in -est.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          For adjectives ending in \u2018c-v-c\u2019 (consonant-vowel-consonant), double the last letter and then add -est. <\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
          • big – the biggest<\/strong> <\/span>\n

            • Incorrect spelling: the bigest<\/li>\n\n
            • Example: The elephant is the biggest <\/em>animal I have ever seen. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/li>
            • thin – the thinnest<\/strong><\/span>\n

                  Rule #2 <\/span>– If the adjective ends in \u2013y, add -iest<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
